What changed
Users increasingly see a composed answer rather than only a list of links. Such an interface must understand the question, find suitable sources, extract facts and connect them into a clear explanation.
For a site author, repeating a key phrase is not enough. A self-contained answer, clear context, verified facts and visible authorship are needed.
What is genuinely useful
- one clear topic and page goal;
- a short direct answer before a long explanation;
- a logical heading hierarchy;
- precise names of people, projects, tools and concepts;
- primary sources for verifiable claims;
- structured data matching visible content;
- honest limitations instead of invented certainty.
What GEO does not do
GEO cannot force ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Copilot, Perplexity or another system to choose a specific site. Google also states that its AI features require no special AI markup; core search and content-quality requirements apply.
GEO is therefore better understood as a discipline of answer architecture, not a promise of visibility.
